How to Land a Lagos Big Boy this Christmas

I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I really had to express myself to the best of my ability and unfortunately that requires a lot of words. LOL. So here we go:

I can only imagine the number of clicks this post will have within a short period of time; seems like landing the next available rich bobo in Lagos is the in-thing in these days.  My question is who is a “Lagos Big boy”? Probably the son of one these powerful oil magnates or a renowned business mogul, of which his sons and grandsons are not left out, an actor, an artiste a director, you name it.

However, what is most appalling is why someone will take to social media and proudly roll out tips on how to ‘land’ a rich guy – failing to highlight possible consequences. I was beyond surprised when I came across a Vlog recently about “How to land a Lagos big boy this Christmas. To be honest, I was quite interested in the content of the vlog so I opened it (like most of you did..hehehehehehehe) to hear the opinions of the Vlogger.

Words cannot begin to describe my disappointment after watching the short but empty video. Empty because I literally spanked myself (spiritually though, hehehehehehehe) for wasting my time and precious MB to watch it (biko data is expensive). My thoughts were “Since when did it become appropriate for a woman to advice another woman publicly on how to become a prostitute?”

Why would a right thinking human being waste the blogosphere to propagate such destructive counsel that will do no good to the already deplorable state of our country? We complain daily that there is corruption in Nigeria; that we are recording more broken marriages than ever before; that people have become so money-thirsty that values and morals have been thrown out the window. Yet we are our own enemy, killing ourselves slowly.

What happened to teaching ladies to be industrious, hard-working, intelligent, purposeful, submissive, supportive, strong and business-oriented? Why advice a lady to look for a Lagos big boy, not minding the source of this wealth or the consequences that come with “landing” this metaphoric lottery.

It’s about time our mothers and wives teach us lasting values about life, relationships, the power of unity, sacrifice, submission, hard-work, patience, values whose importance transcend worldly things. How would we be better women, wives and mothers if our so called role models are already failing us with their actions. Instead of looking for these big boys, why don’t you become a source of strength, encouragement and power to the otherwise ‘small boys’ and build them.

We are all fighting for gender equality and women empowerment, claiming that men see us as inferior and do not give us the same treatment or rights as they do themselves. However, the irony of the situation is that we, as women, are our own greatest enemies.

If a fellow woman can boldly broadcast to the world that ladies should invest money on make-up, hair, shoes and clothes to look good enough to attract a “Big Boy’ rather than invest that money in an enterprise that could empower a lady to be her own “Big Girl”, then I can confidently say that the pursuit for woman empowerment is just a chase after the wind.

Nowadays, we see mothers and so called female celebrities/ role-models teaching ladies by their actions that all you need to attract a man are some pairs of stiletto heels, a little black dress, tons of heavy make-up, a clutch purse and human hair. We propagate the gospel of vanity and materialism, yet we complain that we are not treated with dignity and respect as women.

How can we? When sex has become a medium of exchange for goods and services which include but are not limited to promotions at work, designer shoes, Mango bags, cars, houses, iPhone 6, and Human hair (Cambodian, Peruvian, Mongolian, Carribean, Brazillian- It’s about time we added Nigerian.”

Instead of thinking of how to land a Lagos big boy and how to spot a stingy man in whatever number of days, why don’t we start thinking of how to become successful business women and career women. Rather than invest money in make-up, designer clothes and human hair to attract a man, why don’t we invest the same money on the same things but with a different purpose. Not to attract a man, but to build a personal brand, an image for your business. Spend time thinking of and investing in how to become a successful entrepreneur, business and career woman.

And please to all those bloggers and Vloggers out there churning our garbage and junk in the name of advice and entertainment, the blogosphere was made free so as to create a medium to voice out reasonable and sensible ideas that will change our society and the world at large for good. So please stop abusing this medium.

........and this is the end of my story.
