Y'all remember that movie - Why Did I Get Married 1&2 - right? Well listen up because I'm about to give you the third edition *LOL*.
Why do people get married? If you ask random people this question
their likely reply will be “because they love each other”; but is that
really the reason people get married? If people really got married for ture love, should divorce rates be rising at such a frightening pace? With the state of marriage in the world today, is a marriage certificate a true proof of a man's love or vice-versa?
Personally, I think a lot of marriages will be saved if each partner truly understood why they got married in the first place. Some people got married out of family pressure, to fulfil societal norms, to be recognized in the society and a lot of other flimsy reasons. Identifying why you decided to spend the rest of your life with an individual will help you overcome and surmount whatever marital challenges you might face in the marriage.
You need to be very sure, certain and double convinced that you are ready for the bitter-sweet sojourn of marriage. It aint gonna be rosy all the time. Please before you decide to commit, ask yourself "Why am I getting married? Am I getting married because society wants me to or because I am ready to make this life-long commitment? Am I getting married because I love this person enough to go through thick and thin with him/her? Am I getting married because this guy loves me and proves to be a good husband material? Am I financially, spiritually, mentally, psychologically ready for marriage? Do I know this person well enough to tolerate his weaknesses and help develop his strengths?
People think that getting married means you’ve gotten to know
each other well enough that you can now live together in perfect
harmony, but that is rarely the case. Most people get married
before they really know each other - during the peak of their
relationship when love chemicals still have them drugged. It is usually
during the marriage, as the drugs begin to wear off, that they begin to
learn about each other, those things that are best learned before you
sign on the dotted line to pledge your commitment to tolerate whatever
the other person brings to the table.
Oprah Winfrey has been with her fiance Stedman Graham for more than 20 years without getting married. According to her "If I and Stedman has gotten married, we probably would not have stayed married." She knew she wasn't ready for marriage all these years and they both agreed to respect that decision. However according to reports on Inquisitr, the duo will finally tie the knot very soon.
Nevertheless, providing an honest answer to the question "Why am I getting married?" will help you underscore if you are going into it for the right reasons. I would love to hear your opinion on this subject. Please feel free to drop your comments below. To all married folks, Please tell us "Why did you get married?
